There are currently 105 students in this programme. These children are provided with motivational, tutorial and
extra-curricular support, and medical and financial support is offered to those who require it.

The aim is that children should not drop out of school until at least the 10th grade. This is achieved by having Education Support Centres (ESCs) in community spaces in/near slums or low-income housing colonies.  Apart from the tutorial support, the ESCs also offer children space to study with their peer group and an opportunity to express themselves.

Following are some of the recent activities ESCs undertook, which exemplify how they can supplement the formal schooling experience:



• Children visited a bank where it was explained to them why and how to save with a bank. Different types of bank accounts were described to them, as well as the positive impact saving and asset building can have on alleviating poverty.
• Children were taken to a fire station in Ahmedabad to see how the fire-fighting system works and to understand the link between types of fires and the technique used to extinguish them. The children also participated in a mock drill of a fire call.
• Children learned the techniques of growing saplings from seeds at a Municipal plant nursery in the month of March.  They then planted these trees on one of the main roads of the city in the month of August (during the monsoon).  Prior to planting, they counted all the trees in a section of this road and reported gaps to the Parks & Gardens Department of the City Municipality.
• Children visited a small railway station to understand how the railways work: the signalling system, railway crossings, ticketing, etc. They were thrilled to enter a Stationmaster's office from where he handled the incoming and outgoing trains! This visit also provided the opportunity to explain the risks faced by railway children (the runaway kids using railways as a free means of transport).
