SAMADAAN SHELTER HOME FOR HIV+ CHILDREN
AWARE has borne the costs of this shelter home, rehabilitating children of HIV+ parents for the past four years. Currently, 53 children are being rehabilitated by the home. The 28 boys have moved to a new building at Girigowdanapalya, some 100 kms south east of Banagalore. The 25 girls are waiting for their section of the building to be ready (which it almost is). At present, the girls are at the old building at Kunigal, not very far from the new site. The law in India does not allow boys and girls above the age of seven to be living in the same building.
Samadaan offers shelter, food, medical aid, counselling, schooling, extra-curricular activities (currently, music and dance) and sports facilities. A dedicated team consisting of a coordinator, two wardens, two cooks and a value education teacher manages it. The team is well trained, dedicated and sincere about their work.
In January 2012, this project was evaluated and the evaluator ranked the project very high in terms of its services, facilities, care and protection.
These children, of a highly vulnerable category, are getting a chance to live a near-normal life with AWARE’s support. The team at Samadaan, however, needs more exposure and further training to improve their understanding of the world of childcare and protection in the context of Indian realities. AWARE is organising training sessions and exposure visits to enable them to improve performance.
